Why Is Your Air Conditioning System Smelling Musty And Not Working Properly?

The air that exits your air conditioning system should not have an odor. If you have noticed that the air has a musty smell or that the AC is just not cooling efficiently, then there are quite a few reasons this could be. More often than not, you will need the help of an air conditioning repair professional to remedy the situation. However, in the meantime, keep reading to learn where the musty odor could be coming from and what may be causing the AC to malfunction.

Excess Moisture in the Air Vents or Ducts

There are a couple of reasons that excess moisture could potentially accumulate inside of the vents or ducts, such as a drainage leak or high levels of humidity. If you turn your AC on and notice a musty odor, there could be some mold or mildew within the ducting. Mold exposure is very dangerous, so you need to contact a repair professional as quickly as you can for an inspection, cleaning, and repair.

Frozen Evaporator Coils

Air conditioning units are designed to absorb the warmer indoor air, remove the humidity from that air, cool the air, and then send it back into the home through the return vents. Because of this, free-flowing air is crucial, as are clean air filters. Dust, dirt, and debris will block the flow of air through the air filters, which results in drops of water from the warm indoor air collecting on the evaporator coils. These drops then end up freezing on the coils as the air is cooled by the refrigerant and keeps your AC from working efficiently. This is when you realize just how important it is for the air filters to be changed frequently.

Full Drain Pan

When the moisture is removed from the warm indoor air, water drops into a drip or drain pan. Over time, due to wear and tear, this part of your air conditioning unit may not function as effectively as it once did. If the drip pan is inefficient, it could end up accumulating mold and mildew, which would result in a musty odor being emitted from the vents when the AC is in operation. If this is where the problem is, the drip pan will need to be replaced with a brand-new one.

If your air conditioning system is not working as efficiently or is putting off a musty smell, contact an AC repair professional as soon as possible to check it out and perform the necessary repairs so your unit can get back to properly cooling your home.
